Start As If

Start As If

Back in early 2015, I started a little adventure I called Square 61. The premise was that you could not go back to square one because well, you could not

  1. unlearn what you had learned
  2. undo what you had done
  3. unsay what you had said

You get the picture.

And while there is some truth in that idea, I have realized over time that there is something fresh and maybe even exciting about starting over. This quote from Danielle LaPorte got me thinking in this direction:

“Start as if you’ve never done it before.”

Of course, you can’t forget or even dismiss what you have learned, if you have done this before, but here’s the thing

This is a MINDSET CHANGE. (and really, truly a heart change as well)

a mindset changeWe (we, meaning I, and maybe you do this too) get so set in our ways and caught up in what we coulda, woulda, shoulda, useta do that we lose sight of the possibilities right in front of us.

We give up too soon based on past history.

But you know what?

It’s just that.

Past history. over. done. finito.

It’s up to me how much influence I allow the past to have over me.

And believe me, I know it’s easy to dwell in the past because it’s familiar, even strangely comforting — been there, done that, got the t-shirt and maybe some scars.

There’s no denying that what we’ve been through shapes us.

How could it NOT?

It does NOT have to define us.

So! Back to the subject at hand.

“Start as if you’ve never done it before.”

Sure, you’ve maybe developed some chops, some skills, some wisdom and knowledge, but maybe you’ve harbored some bad habits or closed-mindedness about how to do what you were doing.

maybe you gave up because overwhelm got ahold of you

I can relate. I find myself becoming overwhelmed so much faster than I once did.

But hey!

You wanna start something new? Something that you already did but lost your way in the middle of it? Here’s an idea:

“Start as if you’ve never done it before.”

But remember to:

  • Be gentle with yourself. Be kind.
  • Cut yourself some slack.
  • Become a beginner.

And. Just. Start.
Right where you are.
Right here.
Right now.

And if I can help, give me a holler. We can talk it out.

In the meantime,
Love you, mean it!
